Successful applicants must be at least 16 years of age at the time of sailing and can expect to:
  • Obtain and submit a criminal record check with vulnerable sector check.

  • Sign an online position commitment and agreement to SALTS' Anti-Harassment Policy and Statement of Ethics for Volunteer Crew.

  • Complete a profile form with health & dietary details and emergency contacts.

  • Submit an Acknowledgment of Risks and Liability Waiver form. For any volunteer under the age of 19, a parent or guardian will also have to submit an e-waiver.
If chosen, you will be responsible for your own travel arrangements as well as any overnight accommodations, which are often needed in order to report for duty on time and remain aboard until all duties are complete and you are dismissed by the captain.

Keep in mind that volunteers report for duty earlier than the trainee boarding time, and remain on board after the trainees disembark. If you are offered a position, your specific volunteer times will be outlined in your trip assignment email.

Sailing Seasons

We have two regular sailing seasons: spring/fall trips with schools or other youth organizations, usually 5 days long, and summer trips where individuals sign up to sail, which are usually 10 days long.

This year, we have a third type of trip as well. The Pacific Swift will be participating in a Family Connection Voyage for the first trip of the summer. This will be a unique adventure for teenagers (age 13-18) and their parents.

Group Trips


Each week of the spring and fall, SALTS welcomes school groups and youth organizations on board for 4 or 5-day trips. Because teachers and chaperones accompany these groups, fewer volunteers are needed to support the crew and their roles are less defined than the spring break and summer trips.

Summer Trips


Be sure to check the 2026 summer trip details on our website. If selected, you will be responsible for your own travel to the boarding location and home from the disembarking location, including any necessary accommodation and meals. Pay careful attention to the boarding and disembarking locations.

Indicate Medical and / or Dietary Needs

After applicants have been assigned to a trip, they will report ALL dietary requests (i.e., vegetarian, dairy free, etc.), medically necessary dieatary restrictions, medical conditions and medications on their Personal Profile form.

However, we need to be notified in advance of any significant health conditions and-or dietary requirements e.g. celiac disease, anaphylactic allergy, etc. (see our Physical & Mental Fitness Requirements).
