Minds Matter is a volunteer-driven organization whose mission is to to transform the lives of accomplished high school students from low-income families by broadening their dreams and preparing them for college success. Our volunteers are college graduates who are energetic, committed and successful individuals who dedicate their time to supporting our students in reaching their dreams. The organization has over 2,000 volunteers in 14 cities, serving over 750 students.

With the understanding that many volunteers travel for work and work on weekends, are you able and willing to make a weekly commitment to your mentee and to Minds Matter? Mentoring sessions are 11 am - 12:30 pm.

With the understanding that many volunteers travel for work and work on weekends, are you able and willing to make a weekly commitment to your mentee and to Minds Matter? Writing Sessions are 12:30 - 2 pm.

With the understanding that not all things can be planned for, Mentors are expected to volunteer with their students from sophomore to senior year of high school and see their students through to graduation. This is three years with summers and all school breaks off, totaling approximately 20 sessions per academic year. Do you currently have plans that will prevent you from fulfilling this commitment?

You and your co-Mentor will be asked to provide a meal for the 8-9 students on your team every 8 weeks, approximately 3 times a year. We recommend spending no more than $10 per student, which totals approximately $85 per session or $255 for the year to be split between you and your co-Mentor (around $125 per person). Is that ok with you?

Our sessions are on Saturday mornings 9:30am-1:30pm (Class 9:30am-12:00pm, Mentoring12:30-1:30pm) from October – May (25 sessions). Can you make at least 85% of these sessions? Do you have any other time commitments that might conflict with these sessions?

How many hours per week do you work?

We typically start the program in early September and end in late May. Sessions are in-person & weekly from 11AM - 1PM on the MIT or BU campuses during that time frame. For the good of the students, we require mentors to maintain at least an 80% attendance rate. Are you able and willing to commit to these standards?

We typically start the program in mid-late September and end in early May. Sessions are in-person & weekly for two hours (10AM-12PM for tutors, 12:30AM-2:30PM for mentors/class leads). For the good of the students, we require mentors and tutors to maintain at least an 80% attendance rate. Are you able and willing to commit to these standards?

It's important for our mentors/instructors to attend Saturday sessions in order for students to have a meaningful experience with Minds Matter Seattle, and for mentors and instructors to support each other. While occasional absences are understandable, we expect commitment and consistent attendance from our volunteers. Would you be able to commit to attending at least 80% of the in-person sessions (about 20 Saturdays) in a school year?

We try to pair mentors and mentees depending on the yearly commitment that a mentor can make. For example, if a mentor commits for three years, we will pair that mentor with a Sophomore student so they can stay together until the student graduates.
