Y2Y Harvard Square Weekly Volunteer Application

Thank you for applying to be a weekly volunteer at Y2Y this fall! Please answer the following questions. The priority application deadline is September 27th. Later submissions will be considered on a rolling basis.

We ask this question to ensure that volunteers are 18 or over. Interested volunteers under 18 may still volunteer at Y2Y with a signed permission slip.

Shifts and Availability
We expect to receive many applications this fall and will do our very best to accommodate everyone.  Dinner and evening shifts fill-up, so please include breakfast and overnight shifts within your preferences if possible. Fall shifts will begin with dinner shift on Tuesday, October 15th, and end with the breakfast shift on Saturday, December 21st. You will not be responsible for your shifts during Spring Break (March 9-17). Please note that these dates may be subject to slight adjustments.

Description of Shifts:

Breakfast: 6:30 am - 9:15 am (7:30am-10:00am on Saturday and Sunday)
Dinner: 6:45 pm - 9:15 pm
Evening: 8:45 pm - 11:15 pm
Overnight: 11:00 pm - 9:15 am (11:00pm - 10:00am on Saturday and Sunday)

Breakfast - Come in bright and early to greet our guests! You'll be making breakfast and helping to clean the shelter after all the guests leave at 8:00 am on weekdays or 9:00 am on weekends.

Dinner - You'll be cooking and serving dinner, talking with guests, and perhaps picking up food from one of the many places that donate to us.

Evening - You'll be helping to serve food and clean the kitchen after dinner. This is also a relaxed time to visit with guests as they prepare for bed.

Overnight - Overnight shifts are the longest but most rewarding. You will find yourself a jack-of-all-trades, with jobs including cooking food, doing laundry, and supervising the shelter space. You'll get to hang out with other volunteers and night-owl guests! Don't worry: we take turns sleeping! We divide the night into three sub-shifts, and you will be asleep for two of the three. There is a staff room with several beds, so you'll be able to sleep 5-6 hours over the course of the night.
