GISF Critical Thinking and Analysis Workshop
Join GISF at the Action contre la faim office in Paris for a Critical Thinking and Analysis workshop.
The workshop will be delivered by Senior Security Analyst from World Vision International, Jenna Kuokkanen, who has an MA in Intelligence and International Security from King's College, London, and a decade of experience in security intelligence analysis.
The workshop will be divided into two sections:
Critical Thinking
In today's information age, where information is readily accessible at our fingertips and we each become consumers as well as distributors of news, it has become increasingly vital to equip ourselves and our staff with the necessary tools to navigate through the vast sea of information effectively and responsibly. The ability to critically analyse and evaluate the information presented to us is an essential skill as it empowers us to develop informed opinions, manage our concerns and confusions around issues around us, reduce the spread of rumours and fake news, and support the partnership through evidence-based decision making. The Critical Thinking Training section covers primarily media awareness and provides tools to understand how to interpret news and other online information in a way that filters out the pollution, or fake news.
Foundations of Analysis
The Foundations of Analysis section is designed to equip and strengthen individuals with vital skills in understanding and implementing the information analysis cycle. It will help you as staff, especially if you work in security, with your day-to-day work as well as specific analysis you may need to do in respect to your context. This section will not only help to make existing analysis more effective but should also inform effective decision-making and strategic planning for programming in dynamic and often challenging environments.
Throughout this interactive workshop, we will delve into the information analysis cycle, a crucial framework for gathering, processing, analysing, and sharing/using information in a systematic manner. To practise this, you will individually start to work on a scenario analysis on a topic of your own choosing. This cycle is pivotal for identifying and collecting information on risk levels, scenarios, and potential security threats, analysing and communicating these risks and threats, and contributing to the ‘so what’/implications, to inform decision making and robust strategies to plan, prevent and mitigate them. By understanding and using this cycle, it will help you translate raw qualitative data into actionable analysis, a key competency in the realm of security analysis.
By the end of this two-day workshop, you will have a greater understanding of analysis, equipped with practical skills and knowledge. This can contribute to enhancing the safety and effectiveness of your NGO's operations. Whether you are new to analysis or seeking to enhance your existing skills, this workshop offers valuable insights and tools to navigate the complex landscape of analysis.
