My Insurance

All ILP participants must have adequate travel emergency medical insurance in case of illness or emergencies abroad. It is mandatory that all ILP volunteers purchase international medical travel insurance (that has coverage for the full duration of your ILP semester) to volunteer with ILP.

As a reminder, your at-home insurance does not qualify. Submitting your current, at-home policy instead of purchasing an international policy which fits requirements will jeopardize your semester with ILP.

Your travel emergency medical insurance plan must fulfill the following requirement:

  • It's mandatory that your insurance policy arranges and pays up front (not "claim and reimburse") for emergency medical evacuation. There needs to be a phone number or point of access available for this 24/7.

Point 2 is a very strong recommendation you should heavily consider:

  • Choose a policy which includes 24/7 access to a guarantee of payment to hospitals out of the country.

*You can find a more in-depth explanation of the insurance requirements and further recommendations in your Travel Documents. Please refer back to that if you'd like before choosing your policy, below:

Top Recommendation:
  • GeoBlue (check out the Voyager Plan). Multiple ILP volunteers have had good experiences working with GeoBlue. Past volunteers have had situations where GeoBlue has paid directly for hospitals within their Network. Not all locations have GeoBlue network hospitals/doctors, but even if you go to an out of network hospital, GeoBlue offers to contact the hospital to work out a guarantee of payment letter. It doesn't always work out for every situation but the best chances of not having to pay up front seem to be with GeoBlue. Even just a hospital visit can get quite expensive out of the country, so this is invaluable. GeoBlue also offers a virtual doctor's visit option that can save you hundreds of dollars in transportation costs if you need to travel outside of your area to see a provider.
Addition Recommendations
The options below fulfill the requirements, but are more limited: these policies have some options for direct payment by the insurance instead of requiring you to pay out of pocket then get reimbursed, but don't have a list of contracted hospitals.
  • International Medical Group (IMG) (you might want to consider their Patriot Plan). IMG has a searchable list of providers that have done direct billing with them in the past, but does not have a network of providers out of the U.S. contracted to accept billing.
  • United Health Care Global (you might want to consider their SafeTrip policy). They do not have a list of direct-billing providers but they offer to contact hospitals to try to arrange billing, or offer guarantee of payment or transfer of funds to pay up-front.
Other Options, Not Recommended: — Plans like Generali, Trawick, Worldtrip, AIG, Cigna, and Allianz meet the requirement for emergency evacuation, but for most medical care you are expected to pay up front, out of pocket and then submit a claim for reimbursement after the fact (with some reimbursement coming sometimes 3-9+ months after you pay). For some of these policies, past volunteers have informed us that after understanding how things actually worked, they would not recommend them for future volunteers.
