Building Your SSN Profile
  • Use this form to add new items to your Publications and In the News sections on your SSN Scholar Page. Publications include traditional academic writing like books, journal articles, and dissertations along with policy briefs or memos you may have published without SSN support; In the News items comprise all media work such as OpEds, TV or radio appearances, and journalism that quoted you or cited your research.
  • You can enter up to six items for Publications and six items for In the News using this form. Our goal is not to present an exhaustive list of your work on your Scholar Page, but to allow you to curate a selection of key academic and policy publications and media contributions that you consider indicative of the expertise you want to offer to policymakers, civic leaders, and journalists.
  • If you have questions about your entries, you can review our goals here or email profiles@scholars.org.
Publications
  • You must select a publication type when adding a new item. The choices include: Book; edited Volume; Journal Article; Book Chapter; Working Paper, Report. We suggest using the Working Paper, Report type to format a policy brief, memo, testimony, dissertation or public comment that you punished under the aegis of an institution other than SSN (such as a professional association or a think tank.)
  • At the end of each section, click on "Add another publication" to enter another one.
  • You can enter up to six publications.

Publication Details

Please ensure that publication summaries follow SSN's formatting guidelines and are free or any academic jargon. Non-academic audiences who browse our site and may not have access to paywalled publications greatly benefit from viewing jargon-free summaries of your publications' main arguments and conclusions. SSN publication summary sentences are always formatted to begin with present-tense verbs (e.g. "Examines demographic shifts over a 10-year period in Ohio and analyzes how changes in neighborhood racial and socioeconomic makeup have correlated with housing price fluctuations.") See this scholar's profile for specific examples of publication summaries written in this format.

Example: https://www.publication.org/134

Please include the following information as relevant: publication title, co-author first and last names, publisher, date of publication, editors, pages numbers, chapter and book title, etc (600 character limit).
In The News
  • Media work that's eligible for your SSN Scholar Page's In the News section include: OpEds and blog posts, TV and radio appearances, media interviews, and journalism that quotes you or cites your research.
  • For print-only or otherwise non-linkable media work, email profiles@scholars.org for assistance.
  • At the end of each section, click on "Add another In the News item URL" to enter another one.
  • You can enter up to six items to add to your In the News section.

Civic Engagements
To help you connect to journalists, policymakers, and other civic leaders, it is important to understand your experiences, connections, and interests.

Please provide any other information about your public engagement that you would like SSN to know about. This may include research-practice partnerships, civic engagement courses, service in government, consulting, or campus-based initiatives. (500 character limit)
Related Organizations
I would like to list any civic organizations, policy offices or agencies, media outlets, or campus organizations.

Written Contribution
**To avoid wasting time on ineligible pieces, we strongly recommend that you connect with SSN staff before drafting**

To help you build relationships with key decision makers, SSN requires that every new member write a research-based document in compelling, everyday language. The document is meant to serve as a resource members can offer to a target audience. The type of document and the type of editing support you receive will differ depending on which target audience you choose.
Eligible written contributions for SSN membership include:

• OpEd or blog post published by a media outlet with SSN’s strategic support

• Written testimony or prepared outline for oral testimony

• Public comment on rule or regulation changes

• Research memo, fact sheet, or talking points requested by a non-academic organization or office

• Research brief that is jargon-free, audience specific, and edited and approved by SSN
Ineligible pieces include:

• OpEd or blog post on a topic outside one’s areas of research expertise

• OpEd or blog post that was previously published without SSN’s strategic support

• OpEd or blog post posted by an academic center or university press office

• Informal notes for or correspondence with civic leaders

• Summary of a scholar’s research interests or areas that require more research
