Internship Application Deadlines:

Winter/Spring - August 15

Summer - January 15

Fall (occasionally offered) - March 30

Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis, but must be received by the deadline for the timeframe of interest. Intern selection typically occurs 3-4 months prior to the start of an internship. Please let us know if you have a deadline that occurs prior to our selection and we will consider an alternate timeline based on your qualifications.

Internship Information

Internship timelines vary depending on: program of focus (Veteran-focused, Adaptive-focused, Development-focused), peak programming timeframes, school requirements, and supervisor/intern availability. Start and end dates may vary, but internships are usually scheduled for a minimum of 15 weeks in order to meet NCTRC requirements for recreational therapy students.

All summer internship placements begin in May, June, or early July.

Winter/spring veteran program internship placements typically begin in December or early January.

Adaptive program winter internship placements are scheduled mid-November through mid-April; a five-month commitment.

Higher Ground Adaptive Program Internship
Program model: winter/summer adaptive sport lessons, day and overnight programs, backcountry specialty events
Population: serving local and out of town guests (civilians) with physical and cognitive disabilities
Activities (seasonally dependent): skiing, snowboarding, off-road handcycling, fly fishing, paddle sports, hiking, bocce, golf, disc golf, and more
Responsibilities: program planning and implementation, lesson scheduling and instruction, employee and volunteer management
Notes: some ski/snowboard experience required for winter interns; appropriate for CTRS candidates

Higher Ground Veteran & First Responder Program Internship
Program model: weeklong recreational therapy camps
Population: serving veterans, service members, and first responders with symptoms of traumatic brain injury (TBI), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and military sexual trauma (MST)
Activities (seasonally dependent): skiing/snowboarding, fly fishing, water sports, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, and more
Responsibilities: logistical and therapeutic program planning and implementation, activity instruction and support, post-program follow up
Notes: appropriate for CTRS candidates

Higher Ground Development/Fundraising Internship
Program model: occasionally offering support to programs listed above
Population: interfacing mostly with staff, board members, donors, and volunteers
Activities (seasonally dependent): large-scale fundraising event(s) - gala, supper club, golf tournament - and community events
Responsibilities: event planning and implementation, donor relations, volunteer management, donation processing
Notes: typically offered during early summer; does not meet requirements for CTRS candidates

Internships with Higher Ground include a modest stipend ($500 split between paychecks and processed through payroll). No housing is provided, but interns are eligible for a housing reimbursement (up to $300/month) to make the cost of living more affordable.
