PLEASE READ THOROUGHLY
The summer session at CanIL is a full semester of university credit condensed into 9 weeks. The workload is rigorous. Students may register for a maximum of 4 courses (12 semester hours). If the courses are at the graduate level, it is recommended to not exceed 3 courses (9 semester hours). If you are unsure about how many courses to register for, or which courses to register in, feel free to contact admissions@canil.ca with questions.

You may look at the schedule of courses here: Course Timetable (All times are in Pacific Daylight Saving Time. You can use a Time Zone Converter to convert times to your time zone).
Graduate Program Prerequisites
Students applying for the Master of Arts in Linguistics & Translation program (MALT) at ACTS or the Master of Arts in Linguistics (MA LING) program at TWU need to have completed the following courses either at CanIL or in previous course work prior to beginning at CanIL. If you are unsure which you need to take, please refer to the conditions on your MA acceptance letter, or contact Admissions.
LING 210 Language and Society
LING 230/310 Articulatory Phonetics
LING 330 Phonological Analysis
LING 360 Morphosyntax I
Summer Tuition Rate
The tuition rate for the 2024 Summer Session is $371 per semester hour. Students may receive this reduced tuition rate of $371 per semester hour if the summer session is their first semester at CanIL. Students planning to enter a degree program will pay the tuition rate of their degree program when they officially begin their degree studies (typically the Fall semester). Students returning for a second summer but not enrolled in a degree program should contact admissions@canil.ca to find out what their tuition rate will be.

TWU Technology, Infrastructure & Activity fee
In addition to the base tuition rate, TWU charges a Technology, Infrastructure and Activity fee that is calculated per semester hour (abbreviated as "sh"). This fee is $40 per sh for Canadian students (so, $120 per 3-sh class), and $50 per sh for Canadian PRs and International Students ($150 per 3-sh class). Additionally, if you are taking any courses at the graduate level (course codes 500 and above), you will also be charged a $3 Graduate Student Association (GSA) Fee per sh of graduate-level courses.

Financial Aid
If you have not already, please complete a Financial Aid Application Form as soon as possible. The application can be found on the CanIL website. The application deadline is April 15. You will receive notification of an award amount by early May. Late applications will not be considered, except by special permission. Scholarships and bursary awards will be deposited directly into your TWU Student Account after the add/drop deadline (late June).

Payment Due Date
Final payment is due by May 31. Any applicable exchange rate will be calculated according to the rate when the payment is received. Payment information is discussed on the following page.
Academic Level
Some courses are offered at both 400 and 500/600 level (for example, LING 4/560 covers the Undergraduate code LING 460 and the Graduate code LING 560). 400 level courses (and below) are undergraduate courses and should be taken by students who have not yet earned a bachelor's degree. 500/600 level courses are graduate courses and may be taken by students who have earned a bachelor's degree.

Pre-grad students: Students who are hoping to begin a master's degree in the fall and are taking prerequisite courses in the summer are considered undergraduate students until their MA program begins in September.

Special Note about Online Courses
Dates and Times: The Summer program begins June 10, and most courses will begin that week. Please use the Course Timetable to note when classes will be running. (All times are in Pacific Time. You can use a Time Zone Converter to convert times to your time zone).

Synchronous (live-stream) Courses:
Synchronous courses typically involve live lectures on Zoom, and facilitate interaction between students and teaching staff. On the timetable above, synchronous courses are listed with a specific date/time on the timetable (listed in Pacific Time). You should plan to be available at those times if possible.

Asynchronous (self-paced) Courses: Asynchronous courses are more or less self-paced, with deadlines to help keep students on track. They do not typically have a livestream component, unless the instructor chooses to incorporate discussion groups or labs based on the availability of the students. On the timetable, asynchronous courses are listed at the bottom of the page, rather than being tied to a specific date/time.

LING 210 OL Intersession: This is a special asynchronous (self-paced) session of LING 210 that will run between CanIL's regular semesters, April 29 through June 28. The regular LING 210 course will be an in-person course, beginning June 10. If you are planning to take all four prerequisite courses, you could consider taking the earlier LING 210 OL (Intersession) and complete the course prior to the start of the regular summer courses, in order to reduce your workload.

Page 3 - Community

Online Community Life Events
At CanIL, we value Community Life very highly, and it has always been a significant component of the Summer@CanIL program. The Community Life team has been hard at work developing creative ways to facilitate virtual interaction outside of the classroom in our community of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and field-personnel. These events are great opportunities to have fun together, worship together in chapels, and ask questions about living and serving in different locations around the world.

We encourage you to take part in as many of these online events as you are able, especially if you plan to pursue a degree at CanIL--it will help you to feel much more connected with CanIL community!

What are the best ways to keep track of what's going on at CanIL?

All Community Life Events will be posted as announcements on the website today.canil.ca. This includes date/time information, sign-up sheets (if applicable), etc. Today.canil.ca also has timetable information, a textbook list, a list of upcoming chapel speakers, a link to the CanIL Student Handbook, and more! Bookmark this link and reference it often.

Our CanIL Community group on Facebook is also a very active hub of announcements, questions, discussions, polls, and general fun. If you are not already a member of this group, you can follow this link and request to be added: www.facebook.com/groups/CanILCommunity

Chapel Announcements: There will typically be a list of announcements at most Chapel events, and this can be a great way to keep up with what's going on at CanIL.
Community Life Events
The Community Life program during the summer session at CanIL is an integral part of the growth and training that you will experience here - we place a high value on fostering a strong sense of community life! This involves camping trips, brunches, hikes, and outings of all sorts. So how do you keep track of what's going on at CanIL?

All Community Life Events will be posted as announcements on the website today.canil.ca. This includes date/time information, sign-up sheets, maps to the destination (if applicable), etc. Today.canil.ca also has timetable information, the CanIL directory, a list of upcoming chapel speakers, and more! Bookmark this link and reference it often.

Please note: While we strongly encourage participation in these events, please remember that you are here to study. Do not attempt to participate in all the events (pick and choose your favourites!), and ensure that you have sufficient time to complete your studies and assignments. Remember, in the end - you're here to learn!

All CanIL students, staff, faculty, and general community members are asked to sign the Community Life Waiver each summer before participating in Community Life events. Please go to the Forms to Submit tab in LING 099: Summer: Required Tasks and Info to complete this requirement. If you are married, your spouse will need to submit a signed waiver form as well. If you are an online-only student, you do not need to sign this form.
Student Code of Conduct
As a summer student at CanIL, you are a member of the Trinity Western University (TWU) community, even if you are doing your courses remotely in our online community.

“Trinity Western University (TWU) is a Christian university of the liberal arts, sciences and professional studies with a vision for developing people of high competence and exemplary character who distinguish themselves as leaders in the marketplaces of life.

The community covenant is a solemn pledge in which members place themselves under obligations on the part of the institution to its members, the members to the institution, and the members to one another. In making this pledge, members enter into a contractual agreement and a relational bond. By doing so, members accept reciprocal benefits and mutual responsibilities, and strive to achieve respectful and purposeful unity that aims for the advancement of all, recognizing the diversity of viewpoints, life journeys, stages of maturity, and roles within the TWU community. It is vital that each person who accepts the invitation to become a member of the TWU community carefully considers and sincerely embraces this community covenant.” (SOURCE)

Please read TWU's Community Covenant Agreement. If you have any questions related to living in community at CanIL during the Summer, please contact Summer@CanIL Director Larry Hayashi (larry.hayashi@canil.ca).
