2025 Shui Kuen and Allen Chin Scholarship

Founded in 2005, this scholarship honors the values of Detroit restaurant owners, Shui Kuen and Allen Chin, by supporting the educational aspirations of children of workers in the Asian/Pacific Islander food service industry in the U.S.
Award Information 
Up to two recipients will be awarded a one-time scholarship of $1,000.
Eligibility Criteria 
  • Grade level: Rising freshman or current, full-time undergraduate at a two-year community college or four-year college/university in the 2025-2026 academic year
  • Student or parent currently/formerly employed at an Asian-owned or Asian cuisine restaurant
  • Any ethnic heritage
  • Community advocacy and social justice work on behalf of Asian American, immigrant, gay and lesbian and/or other progressive causes
  • Minimum GPA: 3.0
  • Financial need
  • No citizenship status requirement
Selection Criteria 
  • Personal strengths, including overcoming hardships & understanding the restaurant worker environment
  • Academic achievement
  • Potential to succeed, including time management skills & challenging goals
  • Community service, including involvement in the Asian American community & other progressive causes
Scholarship Application 
The deadline to submit is Friday, April 4th, 2025 by 11:59PM.  
Five to ten finalists will be chosen. Finalists must be submit official transcript(s), SAT/ACT score reports, and FAFSA or CADAA student aid report.
Preparing Your Application 
Your application is comprised of the following materials below. To be considered for review, all materials must be submitted by the deadline. 
  1. Online application form 
  2. Information of employment experience in an Asian-owned or Asian cuisine restaurant
  3. Essays 
  4. Resume 
  5. Financial data for self and parents, as reported on your FAFSA or CADAA
    Estimates will be accepted, but data from your Submission Summary (formerly Student Aid Report) will be required if selected to be a finalist. 
  6. Most recent transcripts, including grading scale
    Unofficial transcripts will be accepted but official transcripts will be required if selected to be a finalist. 
  7. Two letters of recommendations, at least one of which is from a current teacher or professor
    Letters should be on official school or organization letterhead. Please include the student’s first and last name.
