Candidate Information

Each year, the NL Program accepts a group of successful nonprofit management professionals who are leading commercial and community revitalization efforts in their neighborhoods—for example, working in a Business Improvement District, Merchant Association, local development corporation, Chamber of Commerce, or other nonprofit organizations. Selected participants reflect the demographics of New York City, with at least half serving low- to moderate-income neighborhoods. Applicants should be prepared for an immersive, group-structured experience in commercial and community revitalization strategies and leadership development exploration.

Ideal Applicant qualities include but are not limited to:
  • Work in New York City for a nonprofit organization whose work is focused on commercial revitalization.
  • Experienced management staffer who is leading change on behalf of his or her organization around commercial revitalization.
  • Passion for developing new leadership skills germane to problem-solving in New York.
  • Professionals looking to drive meaningful change in the NYC neighborhoods they serve.
  • Professionals working to strengthen neighborhoods through art, culture and green spaces in NYC public spaces.
  • Interest in joining the Coro community and NL alumni network.
At least half of the cohort will be candidates whose organizations serve low- to moderate-income neighborhoods as designated by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Designation prescribes that at least 51% of the residents in the census tracts included in the commercial area must be low- and moderate-income persons living in households with incomes below 80% of the median household income ($47,100 for a 4-person household in 2000).

If you are unsure if your organization serves a low- to moderate-income commercial district, please contact Morgan Geraghty at the New York City Department of Small Business Services at MGeraghty@sbs.nyc.gov. 

No more than half of the slots will be offered for those candidates whose organizations serve neighborhoods that are not low-and/or moderate-income.

Neighborhood Leadership runs from December-June 2025. The schedule amounts to over 15 days of in-person training including (1) program orientation and (3) day opening retreat, (5) leadership sessions, (5) strategy sessions, optional evening sessions and Coro community events, (1) prep session, and (1) presentation showcase and graduation. Due to the experiential nature of our training and the importance of the group in our work together, a commitment to attend all program sessions is preferred. 


Due to known or unexpected circumstances, we understand that participants may need to miss a session. A total of 2 absences are possible with no more than 1 absence for a strategy session and no more than 1 absence for a leadership session. Absences exceeding this could result in your withdrawal from the program.

Please note that full participation/attendance in the Opening Retreat from December 12-14 and end of year Graduation and Showcase events are required.
