Musical Mentors Academy 24/25

Musical Mentors Academy Program Overview

Musical Mentors Academy (MMA) is a private-lesson program that partners with public schools, non-profits, community centers, and other arts organizations offering subsidized one-on-one music instruction for dedicated and ambitious students. Lessons are taught by MMC’s impressive roster of Teaching Artists who not only offer stellar instruction but also bespoke mentorship. Lessons are offered either in person (typically at the partner organization site) or online - depending on each student’s individualized needs.

MMA is for dedicated middle school students (grades 6-8) and high school students (grades 9-12). MMA students want to improve instrumental technique, develop solo and ensemble skills, explore repertoire, and strengthen their performance skills. Our programming is offered to students who have previously excelled in their music classes and/or private lessons, as well as in collaboration with partner organizations for novice students who have an interest and passion for music.

By participating in the program, students receive:

  • 20 1-hour lessons with an MMC Teaching Artist
  • Lessons, masterclasses, and workshops with MMC’s roster of Grandmentors
  • Play-to-Own Instruments*
  • Monthly workshops and studio classes
  • Recital and performance opportunities
  • Free/discounted tickets for live concerts and behind-the-scenes looks at venues in their communities
  • Scholarship opportunities for additional enrichment learning such as summer festivals and preparatory programs

*MMC provides loaned instruments to students who need one at no additional cost. After proving commitment to their instrument and their own musical

development, MMC will purchase an instrument for a student to own.

MMC prioritizes students who would not otherwise have the opportunity to take private lessons or engage in music enrichment opportunities. We typically accept applications starting August 29  and announce decisions by September 26. Lessons will begin in October. Priority goes to returning students and our partner organizations. If you have any questions, please reach out to our Director of Education, daniel@musical-mentors.org.

The following questions help us prioritize applicant needs and best match your student with a Musical Mentor. Please email Daniel@musical-mentors.org if you have any questions.

Use the Ctrl-key to select multiple instruments

e.g . school band, school music class, group music class after-school, one-on-one instruction, family member teaching

E.g. digital keyboard, upright piano, drum set, flute

We can help provide instruments to students who need them. However, we encourage parents/guardians/organizations to provide an instrument if they are able to do so.

We will get this process moving as soon as the student has been matched with a Musical Mentor.

If your student is accepted to MMA, what days and times would generally work best for lessons? Please specify your time zone.

Please help us better understand your student, their learning process, and how we can best approach both group and private instruction. These questions WILL NOT affect your student's admission. MMC's programs are built to be inclusive of all learners and young musicians.
