Musical Mentors Collaborative’s University Chapters serve as a hub for music education, community service, and professional development at affiliated universities. Chapters partner with Title 1 Schools to provide low-cost, student-centered music instruction and mentorship. University students can participate in a variety of activities that help serve youth who have limited access to quality music education. Our volunteer instructors have intensive music training. Some are aspiring musicians or music educators while others are pursuing careers in finance, law, government, consulting, and non-profit. Our volunteers are all talented musicians who love sharing what they’ve learned and mentoring young students.
University Chapter members commit to 10 hours minimum per year of volunteering for MMC. This can include any combination of the following options:
Assisting MME group classes at partner schools (1.5 hrs each) & optional additional 8 private/small group lessons per year in person at the student’s school (30 minutes each)*
Serving on University Chapter E-Board OR serving as University Chapter President
Serving on MMC Fundraising or Community Events Committees
2 professional development trainings per year (1 hr each)*+
*required of Volunteer Instructors
+required of all Chapter Members
Note: all volunteers are required to complete a background check and onboarding session before starting their commitments.
Volunteer Instructors:
Serving as a Volunteer Instructor is a year-long commitment (Fall AND Spring). Students range grades K-8. Most have no music training and attend public schools with little to no arts education budget. Compensation for Volunteer Instructors is $15 for every 30-minute private/small group lesson and $10 for every group class that you teach/assist with.
University Chapter members DO NOT need to serve as Volunteer Instructors. If you feel that your skills are better used for administration, fundraising, community-building, or other useful duties, we still have a place for you!
University Chapter members gain:
A community through their individual university chapter and all of MMC across the country
Opportunities for social service and musical training in the form of masterclasses, workshops, and free/discounted tickets to concerts and events throughout the city
Leadership and management lessons such as responsibility, effective communication, time management and accountability
A new perspective and a deeper appreciation for the value you have to offer
The satisfaction that comes from giving back
MMC starts accepting member applications in early September. Group classes are set to begin the week of September 16. Private/small group lessons begin in November If you have any questions please reach out to Camellia Aftahi, Program Manager (camellia@musical-mentors.org).
