Summer Crew Job Description

Job Summary: The Crew Member is a trainee in a skill building program and assists in the completion of outdoor landscape and ecological projects to maintain, enhance, and increase access to community and public spaces such as nature centers, parks, and trails.  The crew will be no larger than 8 Crew Members to one Crew Leader, a Tree Trust staff member.  The Crew Members will also participate in educational sessions to explore career pathways and build marketable leadership and job skills.  They will engage with employers, receive hands-on training, and earn a paycheck through the completion of meaningful projects. They will experience working as a team and develop pride and confidence in a job well done.

Sturdy/closed toe footwear and long pants are required. High-visibility T-shirts, all work tools and all Personal Protective Equipment (gloves, goggles, hearing protection, etc.) are provided by Tree Trust. 

Hours of Work:  Your crew will work 3 one week, 2 days the other week over each two-week period. On the week you work 3 days, the Wednesday will be a 1/2 day with hours from 8:00 - noon. All other workdays are 8:00 am - 4:00 pm. There will be no weekend work.

Job Duties:

  • Assist the Crew Leader and work with the other Crew Members in the completion of outdoor landscape and ecological projects. Responsibilities may include:
    • Tree, shrub, and flower plantings and invasive species control. 
    • Projects such as the construction of wood boardwalks, timber staircases, timber retaining walls, and wood fences. 
    • Trail maintenance and repair, or installation of handicap accessible trails.
    • Installation of landscape pavers, modular block retaining walls, and other similar projects.
  • Safely and competently use hand tools (Power tool use not allowed) including but not limited to shovels, augers, screwdrivers, pruning saws, loppers, hand pruners, pitch forks, levels, sledgehammers, tape measures, carpenter saws, chisels, hammers, pry bars, wheelbarrows, step ladders, paint brushes, string lines and chalk lines.
  • Follow the direction of the Tree Trust staff and follow production, quality, and safety standards as directed.
  • Focus on learning, both during project completion and educational sessions.

Required Skills:

  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively in a team environment with a diverse group of individuals, communicating information and ideas so others will understand.
  • Ability to work independently, following multi-step instructions.
  • Ability to focus on and participate in learning, both during project completion and educational sessions, which requires verbal communication, concentration on tasks, and observing and remembering details.
  • Ability to work on outdoor landscape projects in conditions that may include rain, cold, heat up to 100 degrees, dust or odors, and humidity, for multiple hours in a day. 
  • Ability to work around noise with hearing protection as necessary.
  • Ability to continuously use of hand, eye/hand coordination, legs, arms, and fingers to use hand tools and lift and use materials from 10-25 pounds, and sometimes 26-50 pounds.

If you live in St. Paul, you will also need to fill out a Right Track application through the City of Saint Paul. The deadline is usually early spring. You must apply to Right Track in addition to completing this application to participate in Tree Trust's Summer Youth Employment Program.

The Tree Trust Summer Youth Employment Program needs to collect the data in this application in order to determine your eligibility to participant in the Summer Youth Employment Program. 

If you are determined to be eligible, and offered a spot in the program, as part of your application for and participation in the Summer Youth Employment Program you will be asked during the application process to agree to the sharing of wage and employment information with the federal, state and/or local governments which provide funding for this program. Whether or not you agree at that time to the release of wage and employment information will not affect your participation in the Tree Trust Summer Youth Employment Program.
