How do caring responsibilities intersect with disability and the music industry?

Welcome to our survey. As we know from previous Parents and Carers in Performing Arts research, working in the music sector presents unique challenges for those balancing careers and parental and/ or caring responsibilities.

Parents and Carers in Performing Arts and Attitude is Everything are now partnering to shine a light on the experiences of Deaf, disabled and/or neurodivergent individuals who navigate both their careers in music and their responsibilities as carers and/or parents.

Parental responsibilities are clearly defined as an adult or caregiver responsible for the upbringing, care, and guidance of a child. The definition of a Carer is less clear. We understand that many people may not identify as ‘carers’, whilst still providing daily living task support to another adult, or child with additional requirements, in their lives.

By ‘disabled people’, we mean anyone who identifies as such, and those who may have legal protections under the Equality Act 2010 as a disabled person but not personally identify as such.

We recognise that this might include:
  • People who identify as Deaf and use British Sign Language as a first language.
  • People who identify as deaf (typically people who use hearing aids and/or lip-reading).
  • People who identify as neurodivergent (which can include people with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia and Tourette’s syndrome).
  • People with learning difficulties
  • Many people with long-term medical conditions or diseases (such as cancer, HIV etc).
  • Many people with mental health conditions that impact their daily lives.
We know that the barriers faced by disabled individuals can be compounded by the challenges faced by caring and/or parental responsibilities , often leading to underrepresentation in the industry. By capturing your experiences, we hope to identify barriers and highlight best practices in order to share them with the industry.

Your insights are invaluable. Together, we can ensure that every voice is heard, and that the music industry reflects the richness of its contributors.

Thank you for being a part of this important conversation.
